DEFFORD. Explorer's Pack.

Arthur has been reading the Time Traveller’s Guide and he thinks he has discovered something big, something very bigI  If he is right he will be able to tell everyone why there were two abbots in Pershore on that day back in 1204.

This is it!

Arthur thinks he knows why Pershore market was shared by two abbots.  He thinks its all to do with Pershore being divided into two parishes - the parish of Holy Cross and the Parish of Westminster.  Before he can tell everyone what he has discovered he needs  to visit some of the villages to test out his theory.

Arthur and Gruff are on their way to Defford  see what he can discover there,  but will anybody be able to help them?  They need your help.  Will you walk around Defford and do your own detective work.  See what you can find that they might recognise and then see

WHERE TO GO

  • Park in the road outside the church.
  • Start to explore Defford at St James’ Church, walk all round it, look at the doors, the windows and the buttresses.  Go inside if you can.  Don’t forget to write in the Visitors Book.
  • Take a walk along the road that goes round the back of the church.
  • Back at the junction with the Village Street turn left. Walk towards the village cemetery. Go through the gate and look at the view.  Look over towards Defford Common and the Estate Office of the great Croome Estate and the Malvern Hills beyond.
  • From the cemetery, walk towards the railway bridge and the new Village Hall. Look over towards Bredon Hill - imagine a great castle on the hill. The castle was owned by the Beauchamp family; they became the Earls of Warwick. Imagine their flags flying up there on the hillside
  • Wander back to the church.
  • If you want to extend your walk go past the church and on down the hill. Look carefully at the names of the streets and the houses.  What are they telling you?  Green lanes, now called footpaths, leave the village street and travel down the hill towards the Pershore to Upton Road. If you explore them you will get some idea of how it felt to be in Defford long ago.
