This Norman church stands proudly on a hill with commanding views of rural Worcestershire. Flower beds surround the sandstone building.

 

The churchyard is the final resting place of Frances Ridley Havergal the Victorian poet and hymn writer who was born in Astley in 1836.

 

Inside this Norman building the Chantry Chapel houses the painted tombs of the Blount family.


 

LOOK FOR

  • Gargoyles above porch. Possibly an example  of  the work of masons Hereford  School  Sculpture.
  • Blount  family tombs. Painted effigy’s in 16th.cent. costume .
  • Grave of Frances  Ridley Havergal. Renowned hymn writer and  poet. 
  • Site of Priory  since 1102. One of only 2 alien houses in U.K. dedicated to St. Taurin of Everaux in France, the other being Knelston, on the  Gower, Wales.
  • Some unique architectural features such as a double pilaster string course.
  • A modern stained glass window depiciting Water to commemorate the Millennium. 

LOCATION AND TRAVEL   Approximately 4 miles from Stourport off  B4196  towards Worcester.

Right turn at cross roads at Bull Hill signposted  Yarhampton and Church .

Or left turn off  the A451 from Stourport,   in Dunley  Village after passing Dog Inn.

Things to do. There are many local walks in this area of beautiful countryside Franciscan  Monastery and Retreat  House at Glasshampton .
